Helen Martino trained at Farnham College of Art and Central School of Art and Design in London. She works from her studio in Cambridge which has been established for over 20 years.
She uses hand building techniques with soft, flexible sheets of high-firing clay.
These are freely cut, curved and sometimes twisted. The surfaces are decorated with slips,
under-glaze pigments, paper and wax resists. Sometimes silver, gold or copper leaf and lustres are added.
She is currently exploring the theme of women in dialogue.
Of course there is speaking and listening but also the internal dialogue of imagination,
thoughts and dreams and this can be seen in her figures. The subtlest difference in form
or surface may change the mood of a piece. The work explores the tension between form, surface,
imagination and communicaiton.
Helen has also developed a particular pot shape of her own - the 'kiss pot'.
