Maureen Minchin studied at the Bath Academy (1973) but gained most of her practical knowledge of ceramics from workshops
in Arran, Sutherland, Norfolk, Italy and the Dartington Pottery in Devon.
This Puffin Jar (opposite), like most of Maureen's work, is inspired by a beautiful and remote part of Argyll where
she lives and works. Her hand thrown earthenware lidded jars and other vessels depict Nature's abundance from the sea
shore to the mountain and moor. Maureen makes pots which she hopes people will delight in using but which also give
a sense of the hidden natural world.
Her domestic pots are thrown in terracotta clay, sprigs and handles attached and then dipped in a cream slip.
Once a pot is firm again the slip is drawn into with a sharp tool and then left to dry.
After being fired at 950 C the pots are decorated with underglaze colours, glazed and glossfired to 1140 C under
light reduction.
She was a prize winner at the 2nd International Saltglaze Exhibition (1983) and recently her work has achieved high
prices in the auctions of contemporary ceramics held at Bonhams in London.
Her work is featured in numerous private and public collections world wide including that of Henry Rothschild.
