Shazia Mahmood

Gallery 1 - Gallery 2

Shazia Mahmood studied Fine Art Painting at Winchester School of Art (1993-1997).

Since completing her artistic studies, she has devoted her time to the exploration of a very specific and quite unique method of painting. Her process-based technique relies on the phenomenon of chromatography - the colour-separation reaction that occurs when two specific mediums interact. In her work the base medium is a layer of PVA glue on canvas. When inks are then applied the glue draws out the individual dyes to create a distinctive colour transition.

After several years of experimentation Shazia's intimate knowledge of the technique allows her to control the progress of each reaction to produce her desired visual result.

As the basis of her landscape pieces - inspired by the rugged West Scottish coastline - the chromographic technique lends her work an evocative, mysterious air that cannot be matched by traditional methods. Once satisfied with the initial layers of ink, Shazia works on top with thick oil paints to create a stunning 3D effect.

New paintings now live on these gallery pages.
