Ian McWhinnie was born in 1952 in Glasgow and studied at Glasgow School of Art (1970-1974).
He says: “I originally studied Drawing and Painting at Glasgow School of Art
but an increasing interest in ceramics both in my own work and in teaching led to an
exploration of form and design. My work seems to have gone full circle, and I have now returned to painting,
albeit in a different style from my art school days. My subject matter is taken from a range of ideas,
including performers, the circus, musicians and images from travels, particularly France and Italy.
The paintings are all oil on gesso board. I start with a detailed tonal drawing followed by an under
painting, gradually building up colour and finally applying thin glazes.”
The Castle Gallery in Inverness was the first gallery to realise his potential,
to offer him an exhibition and to take his paintings to art fairs, the most recent
being the Glasgow Art Fair 2010.
New paintings are now live on Gallery 1.
Prices range from £400 - £1,500
