John Nicholson grew up in Surrey and was educated in Dorset.
He studied at Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting, London and now lives and works in the North of Scotland.
Between 1965 and 1966 he painted in London and Paris before gaining a teaching qualification.
He retired from teaching art in 2003 and now paints full-time.
John prefers to paint outdoors, directly from nature. His still-lifes are reserved for rainy days !
In all his work he aims to achieve a significant balance between subject matter and the abstract elements.
The art critic Richard Jacques comments "Working in oil and mixed media, the artist's style, as
regards form and composition, is broad and assured. The colours, for the most part close-toned
but often chromatically contrasting, give these pictures a distinctive resonance and great quality."
