Helen graduated in 1987 with Honours from Edinburgh College of Art.
After a year at the Royal College of Art in London, she moved to the west coast of Scotland
to live and work as an artist.
She uses soft pastels on archival sandpaper which grips the pigment, allowing rich layers
of colour to be built up. Using natural colour and a strong sense of form, she captures
the essence of a place or time, enhancing the smaller aspects and giving the pebbles,
tree bark and people as much importance as the wider landscape.
She is fascinated by the dynamic of light, whether the dance of light upon a frothing wave,
the deepest shadow beneath a pebble or the drama of a silhouetted figure against a sun
drenched sea; the contrast between the shadows and light is what drives, inspires and
excites her as an artist.
