John Bellany was born in Port Seton, Scotland in 1942.
He studied at Edinburgh College of Art and the Royal College of Art, London.
He is perhaps one of the best known Scottish artists working today. He is internationally recognised for his large, highly coloured and expressive figurative paintings incorporating hybrid creatures and powerful imagery of the sea.
He also has a considerable reputation as a printmaker.
He has had major retrospectives at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery in London, the Gallery of Modern Art in Hamburg and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
His work features in numerous collections world-wide including the Tate Gallery, all the major Scottish galleries and numerous museums throughout the world. He was awarded a C.B.E. by The Queen in 1994.
