James Dodds was born in 1957 in Brightlingsea, Essex and initially trained as a shipwright.

He then studied Art at Chelsea School of Art (1977-80) and the Royal College of Art (1981-84).

He now lives and works in East Anglia.

His paintings and hand-made prints are inspired by boats and boat building, especially those craft peculiar to East Anglia. As well as printing limited edition woodblock and linocut prints, James also publishes hand made artists books.

His work is featured in numerous private and public collections including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Horniman Museum, London.
