Veta Gorner was born in 1974 in St. Petersburg but now lives in London and Sweden.
She studied, from 1993-98, at the St. Petersburg State Artistic and Industrial Academy (formerly, the “Muhina School of Industrial Arts”) gaining a MA in
Interior Design and Architecture.
From 1996-2002 she worked for various international publishing and advertising companies in roles ranging from art-director to
graphic designer and illustrator. Her career changed direction in 2002-03 when she studied printmaking at Morley College, London under Frank Connelly and then became
involved with the Brenda Hartill's Printspace Studio and Gallery in London and the Greenwich Printmakers Association.
She says: “I am exhilarated by the challenge of printmaking and its ability to incorporate a multitude of other techniques: a fusion of design, engineering, sculpture,
architecture, drawing and painting, logic and intuition. For me there is an ongoing excitement of experimenting with materials, setting challenges and finding
solutions to them. My original style merges the art of traditional etching with the 3D sculptural qualities achieved through deep biting (layer after layer)
zinc matrix plates. This combination of open bite etching (with its sculptural effect) and monoprint techniques (adding multiple layers of colour) creates
original prints in which every impression is unique. The resultant textures and lines transferred from an etched zinc plate create images quite simply only
possible in printmaking.”
