Russell Wilson (b.1971) graduated with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design and has worked as an illustrator, ceramicist and artist for the last 20 years. His bird sculptures are painstakingly constructed using a time consuming felting technique that involves repeatedly stabbing merino and rare breed wools with a special barbed needle that mats the fibres together until they take on a solid three-dimensional form. Recycled fabrics and stitching are used to suggest markings. His lifelike and life-size birds are reminiscent of Victorian taxidermy specimens. Russell’s favourite bird is the sparrow.
