He is a consummate craftsman and his poetic imagery strikes a chord, although precise meanings can sometimes be elusive. ‘A Night of Islands’ (1991) is a magnificent suite of ten colour etchings with aquatint inspired by Gaelic poetry and sketchbooks containing daily observations and experimental work. A Catechism of the Laws of Storms - John Burnside Poems & Will Maclean Images
A series of twelve screenprints on BFK Rives 260gsm paper in a limited edition of 40. Printed by Paul Liam Harrison at the Visual Research Centre, DJCAD, University of Dundee. 2014.
Using woodcuts from 1882-3 issues of the weekly newspaper 'The Pictorial World', Will Maclean assembled a series of collages that he scanned and then digitally altered to create images relating to descriptions of storms and hurricanes. His references were nautical books and manuals in his own collection, in particular Henry Paddington's 'The Law of Storms'. John Burnside then composed a series of twelve poems in response to those images and Will in turn altered the images in response to the poems.
